COMMUNITY CREDIT UNION WARNS ABOUT PHONE SCAM
July 21, 2011
Lewiston – Community Credit Union is warning recipients of automated “vishing” phone calls requesting information, to not provide personal or account information. The Credit Union has received several reports of fraudulent recorded phone calls advising individuals that their debit or credit card has been compromised and asked them to enter personal information, such as social security number and mother’s maiden name.
Community Credit Union is just one of many financial institutions that are being fraudulently represented on the vishing calls. Vishing is the use of the telephone system to gain personal or financial information from individuals. Vishing uses caller ID spoofing to display a possible trusted phone number to the caller using an automated system. It is typically used to steal credit or debit card numbers and other personal information used in identity theft schemes. Vishing is difficult for legal authorities to monitor or trace. Community Credit Union is working closely with law enforcement personnel to track down the source of the attacks and legally shut them down.
Community Credit Union advises its members and the general public to protect themselves from these types of scams:
- Don’t give out personal information on the telephone, via email or text message
- Ask for the person’s name and phone number and tell them you will call them back (the caller usually hangs up when this happens)
- Hang up and call your financial institution immediately through a phone number from a source that you know is legitimate.
“The relationship between you and your financial institution is built on trust, and it's something scammers continue to exploit. The best thing anyone can do if they ever get a call, email or text saying there's a problem with their account is to not respond. Contact your financial institution through a phone number from a source that you know is legitimate, and contact your local law enforcement agency, as well. Our first priority is to protect our members and making them and the public aware that this scam is out there and is important to us. Unfortunately, though, these types of scams are becoming commonplace so we must continue to remain vigilant about this issue,” explained Donna R. Steckino, President/CEO of Community Credit Union.

CREDIT UNION HELPS FEED THE HUNGRY
June 2, 2011
LEWISTON - Statistics show 10% of Maine households, representing 150,000 people, experience food insecurity. Several factors contribute to this; including income growth that is outpaced by cost of living; high level of underemployment; widening gap between rich and poor; illiteracy; and lack of consumer information on nutrition. For this reason, Community Credit Union was proud to present St. Mary’s Food Pantry with a check in the amount of $600.
“We rely solely on charitable donations to feed the hungry of Lewiston/Auburn.,” explained Joyce Gagnon, Manager of the St. Mary’s Food Pantry. “And with each box of food we distribute, we always add our prayers, our support, and our hope for a better tomorrow.” St. Mary’s Food Pantry, located in Lewiston, helps to provide food for low income families in Lewiston-Auburn. As part of the St. Mary’s Nutrition center of Maine, they work in conjunction with many area agencies to ensure they are meeting the needs of those who are hungry in our community.
Every year, Community Credit Union participates in the Maine Credit Union League initiative known as “Ending Hunger.” Since its creation, Maine Credit Unions have raised over $3.9 million to help end hunger in Maine. At the end of each year, a portion of the money raised by each individual participating credit union is given back to that credit union to then be distributed to hunger organizations in their own community.

CREDIT UNION HELPS STUDENTS CELEBRATE ARBOR DAY
May 24, 2011
Lewiston- In celebration of Maine’s State Arbor Week from May 16th through 20th hundreds of Fourth Grade students in Androscoggin County will roll up their sleeves and plant a tree. Community Credit Union recently adopted 5 schools and purchased trees for the students to plant. The project is part of the Fourth Grade Foresters project whose goal is to help revitalize a remarkable idea--observation of Arbor Day in America’s schools.
Community Credit Union provided fourth graders at the following schools with trees to take home and plant:
- Washburn Elementary School in Auburn, 35 trees
- Greene Central School in Greene, 60 trees
- Elm Street Elementary School in Mechanic Falls, 45 trees
- Poland Elementary School in Poland, 70 trees
- Carrie Ricker Elementary School in Litchfield, 110 trees
Jennifer Hogan, Marketing and Business Development Director of Community Credit Union said, “We are always looking for new ways to get involved with both the schools and environmental projects. This project provided us with the opportunity to do both. We sponsor the Pine Street Community Garden with Lots to Gardens and also host an annual Community Recycle Day. We felt this was another way to reach people, specifically young people, to make them aware of our environment so they can begin to do their part to help preserve our planet.”
“Community Credit Union covered the cost of each of the individually packaged evergreen trees, so that there is no cost to the students, the teachers, the school, or the taxpayer,” Debra Ersch, Cofounder of the Fourth Grade Foresters Project stated. “It’s a wonderful way to show support for the community, education and the environment.”
Fourth Grade Foresters USA was created to provide a simple and inexpensive way for any individual, business or organization to send the 4th Grade students at an elementary school home with a tree of their own to plant and care for. Each fourth grader receives an individually packaged 12”-18” evergreen tree seedling sealed in a polybag by workers with disabilities. Each package includes information about Maine’s Arbor Day, planting and care instructions, and the name of its sponsor.
